One of the perfect items in a home or hospitality decor where a beautiful etched, carved and painted custom design is applied to, are MIRRORS. In addition to a bathroom or vanity, custom mirror is also fantastic for residential entries or foyers, for creating a spacious and open feel, through which a custom art piece can be made.

Limitless textures and patterns can be etched & carved as a mirror frame. The design can be applied on either the front or back surface, depending of course on the design elements as well as the desired effect. Etching on the front will create a double image, which in some cases is undesirable, in other cases, perfect!

We often create glass wall art pieces using mirror. Landscape scenes etched or carved on the front surface of the mirror are stunning works of art. Mirror comes in a variety of colors, but they aren't "limitless". There's bronze, grey, black, peach, green and blue .. but they don't create limitless "shades" of each color. There's just a standard basic selection. The good news is that we can apply any custom color to the surface to create the desired effect, complimenting the surrounding decor.

Etched Glass Window for Privacy & Decorative Effect

When most people think of the term "etched glass window" they likely picture n their mind a white, frosted effect on the glass, which of course is completely accurate. There are, however, different forms of and techniques for achieving etched glass. At Sans Soucie Art Glass, we use a number of various related terms that help us to be more specific with our clients, about the different effects we apply to the glass and various techniques we use. For example, etched glass can be SOLID, and/or it can have SHADING. In this article, we're going to show examples of both.

A very accurate example of a true "etched glass window", this window features a border of roses, that have been ETCHED AND SHADED, with the background solid etched glass. These privacy windows do not diminish the amount of light coming into the room, but they do beautifully reduce GLARE.

SOLID ETCHED GLASS can be achieved through both acid etching, as well as etching the glass by sandblasting. At Sans Soucie Art Glass, our primary method of etching the glass is by sandblasting. The simplest form of what we do, would be a simple, solid etching of the glass, over the entire surface. We do this on a regular basis for door or window glass, where all that's needed is a nice, frosted white privacy glass for a window or door.

Etched Glass Bathroom Privacy Windows, featuring a Diamond Grid Pattern. The etching comes up just far enough on the window to glass to provide the privacy level needed. The top portion is left clear, allowing for visibility which creates a really nice, open feel in the room, while still having the privacy needed in the tub and shower area.

A solid etched design, means that the glass will feature some sort of a design "element", if you will, that is brought out using clear pinstripes, or there's a design element (such as text, or a company logo) that's left CLEAR on the glass. (As seen on the glass panel partitions at the Long Beach Renaissance Hotel, "Renaissance Waves", below. The background has been solid frosted and the waves are left in clear glass. This would be referred to as a "solid etched glass design").

Etched Glass Door Inserts, SOLID ETCHED rectangles provide a nice degree of obscurity with contemporary feel.

Etched Glass Panels, restaurant dividers that have been solid (reverse) etched, with an irregular chiseled top edge. This glass is installed inside the Long Beach Renaissance Hotel, in Long Beach, California.

I went through our Windows Gallery this morning, and searched out some of the best examples I could find of a simple, true, "etched glass window" and have posted them in this blog. I'm also demonstrating by placing photos next to one another, of what a SOLID etched glass looks like, verses an etched glass design that also features SHADING. Take a look at the photos of the etched glass mountains: The first photo shows a SOLID ETCHED GLASS technique, the second shows mountains that have been ETCHED AND SHADED. The solid etched, will provide a bit more privacy than the mountains with the shading. "Shading" the glass, is where the sandblast artist leaves a degree of clear glass, lightly fading out the white frosted glass at the edges of design elements. This really creates a beautiful, two dimensional look, EVEN tho this glass is not CARVED. Carving (as seen in the photo of the ROSE) is where the glass is actually sculpted with a design. The artist sandblasts longer and creates a 3 dimensionally, sculpted "relief" texture into the glass.

Etched Glass Window SOLID ETCHED, negative or reverse etching method. This is a shower window, etched for privacy in a Mountain Landscape design.

Etched Glass Window SHADED .. glass is surface etched with shading to create a two dimensional effect.

This photo really represents well, what an "etched and SHADED" design element will look like. These Iris Flowers and Leaves or Reeds are etched and shaded, while the background is solid etched, or frosted. Just a small degree of privacy was needed, in the lower portion of these multi-lite windows.

At first glance, these sidelites may appear to have Monsterra leaves that are solid etched only, but if you look closely, you'll see that there's some light shading between the leaves.

An Etched Glass Window with a clear ironwork motif. This window will provide some privacy when viewed from a distance, but of course when the glass is closely approached, visibility will be possible through the wide clear bands.

Carved Glass Window: My final example, this window is made up of a heavy glass pane, suitable for carvng. The flowers have been beautifully SOLID CARVED. There is no shading, but the glass is not merely "etched", but three-dimensionally sculpture carved. The details in this glass, are absolutely stunning. Art deco glass typically featuring geometric shapes and formations are very popular and over the years we've created some really unique pieces in this modern design style. Table tops are typically a thicker, heavy glass which is what's needed in order for us to deep carve the design in to the glass (as opposed to just etching the glass surface which is all that's permissible on a thin glass surface), so in most cases, the design is carved into the glass, creating what many people would refer to as a cut glass table. When the design is cut or carved in the glass, it creates a sculpted effect where the design actually looks like its "free floating" in the glass.

Pantry Door Glass: Etched Designs From Classic to More Custom

Etched glass pantry door inserts are a very popular item seen in many homes. Having an etched glass pantry door, rather than a plain solid door, will add a wonderful custom element and “open feel” to any kitchen.

At Sans Soucie Art Glass, we create a wide variety of designs, with a very broad price range. From the classic, very simple panel where the glass is solid frosted for obscurity, leaving a border of clear pinstripes and the word “Pantry” … to a more detailed, decorative design, such as a multi-stage carved and gluechipped design, such as our “Bundled Wheat Pantry”. As with all our glass, there are limitless design possibilities.
The basic pantry glass designs range in price between $325 to $425, depending on the size of the glass and how many elements are featured (a border, the word “Pantry” and perhaps a whimsical “chef” of veggies). These designs are what’s called a negative, “single stage sandblast” and while they are very simple, the glass will add a very nice, custom look to your pantry door. There are many various types of borders and type styles to choose, all of which can be seen in our Pantry Glass Production Designs Gallery our web site.
The more custom, or multi-stage designs will range in price from about $600 to $1400, as always depending upon the size of the glass, the complexity of the design and whether we surface etch or sculpture carve it into the glass. Naturally, the goal with pantry door glass is to obscure the view into the pantry, which means the majority of the glass surface will need to have some sort of coverage, whether it’s a solid sandblast, a gluechip surface or carving and shading. Leaving some clear areas is fine, so long as they’re narrow, or small. These areas will appear “dark” the majority of the time, when the pantry light is turned off. When the lights are flipped on, the glass will of course beautifully illuminate and all the details will be even more visible.

Another great example of what can be done in glass, where custom size shelving is needed, are these "Iceberg Edge Shelves" that are installed inside two side niches of an entertainment center. On these glass shelves, the custom edge is sandblast actually etched and carved on the top surface, for a different effect. Again, they're custom fit for inside the niches, floating on top of stainless steel round peg supports and coordinate beautifully with the beautiful art glass pieces and vases set on each. The custom lighting inside the niches is crucial, highlighting and setting if all off perfectly.

Marine Corps Seal Carved in Glass by Sans Soucie

Sans Soucie Art Glass Studios was recently selected to carve the United States Marine Corps seal, for installation inside the Officers Club at the U.S. Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in Twentynine Palms, California.

The 36" diameter seal is deep carved on the front side of a 1/2" thick clear, tempered glass panel. The panel is installed as a wall art piece, using stand-off posts and is spot lit from the ceiling.

The panel was delivered and installed by Sans Soucie glaziers in July 2009 and is now proudly on display inside the officers club.

The Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center (MCAGCC), also known as 29 Palms, Twentynine Stumps or simply the "Stumps", is the largest U.S. Marine Corps base in the country. Its located adjacent to the city of Twentynine Palms in southern San Bernardino County, California. Twentynine Palms has a reputation within the Marine Corps for its relative desolation and isolation, due to the harsh desert climate and the remote nature of the base. As of the year 2000 census, the base had a total population of 8,413. The base was first established in 1949.

In 2008, Sans Soucie Art Glass Studios was selected to carve the Presidential Seal for the brand new aircraft carrier the "USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77)". The seal is sculpture carved in 3 dimensions on a 1/2" thick, 28" wide x 46" tall piece of "Starphire" Clear Glass. The impressive design is finished with the signature of 41st President, George H.W. Bush just beneath it and is illuminated by LED

edge lighting to give it an authorative presence. The piece is now on display in the entrance of the Tribute Room on board the ship, where photographs and biographical information about George H.W. Bush are arrayed to honor the namesake of the ship.

Named after the nations 41st President, the USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77) is the 10th and final Nitmitz-class aircraft carrier. This revolutionary ship with its numerous improvements and modernizations will pave the way to a new class of carriers. We are honored to be a part of this significant piece of our nation's Naval fleet.
